Trauma & EMDR Therapy in Sherman, TX

Something happened, or a lot of things happened, and it still follows you: in your body, your sleep, your relationships, and the way you see yourself. Trauma therapy at Texoma Specialty Counseling gives you a safe, steady place to heal at your own pace.

What trauma can look like

  • Nightmares, flashbacks, or memories that pop up out of nowhere

  • Feeling on edge, jumpy, or always waiting for something bad to happen

  • Numbness, shutting down, or feeling disconnected from yourself

  • Shame, guilt, or believing what happened was your fault

  • Avoiding people, places, or feelings that remind you of what happened

  • Trouble trusting others or feeling safe in relationships

Trauma isn't only one big event. Ongoing stress, childhood experiences, abuse, sexual trauma, medical trauma, and loss can all leave a mark.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-researched therapy that helps your brain process painful memories so they lose their emotional charge. You don't have to describe every detail out loud. Your therapist guides you through short sets of bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones) while you briefly focus on a memory. Many people find the memory still exists but no longer feels like it's happening now.

Other ways we treat trauma

  • Trauma-informed talk therapy at a pace you control

  • Parts work and DBT skills for overwhelming emotions

  • Body-based and mindfulness tools to help your nervous system settle

  • Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) for PTSD that hasn't improved with other treatment

Trauma processing group

Healing can also happen in community. Our Trauma-Informed Psychoeducational Process Group meets monthly, with a new theme each month such as self-esteem and boundaries.

It depends on you and what you've been through. Some people feel relief in a few months; complex trauma often takes longer. We'll check in on progress together.

Is EMDR available online?

Many therapists offer EMDR by video. Ask when you book.
