Dr. James Wilkins, LPC

Howdy, my name is James Wilkins!

I’m so glad that you’ve decided to take this important first step in reaching out for support.

I work with adults, couples, teens/adolescents who are experiencing difficulties with mood, motivation, depression, anxiety, loss of identity, family/relationship issues and more. It is my goal to foster understanding and assist you in your aspirations towards your personal defined happiness and living your meaningful best life.

My Qualifications & Philosophies

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Texas and a member of the Texas Counseling Association (TCA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA). I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Sciences from the University of North Texas and Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Texas, and I am currently pursuing my PhD in Counseling from Texas A&M University-Commerce.

I believe that we are all individuals and there is no one-treatment approach for every client, therefore, I use several treatment approaches depending on the individual. It is in my worldview that if people are given the appropriate means and conditions, they will naturally gravitate towards their greatest possible potential. I see counseling as an open and genuine conversation between two people, working together through a therapeutic alliance towards realization and respective definitions of happy. You are the expert of yourself, and I am here to assist you in your journey towards problem solving and self-fulfillment.

Questions for James

  • I mainly adhere to the Humanistic approaches in counseling such as Gestalt, Existential, and Person-Centered. Gestalt Counseling looks at the here and now to fully experience emotions and what is going on in the present. Existential Counseling looks at life’s big questions pertaining to purpose and response. Finally, Person-Centered Counseling puts the client first and in control through empathic understanding, congruence, acceptance, and unconditional positive regard. As these are more indirective approaches, I am still directive in session guiding the session to possible places I feel are important to explore, with client readiness, and may bring exercises and activities for us to use in session to elicit growth and understanding. I believe that the therapeutic relationship can be very powerful and together we can make strides towards self-actualization.

As humans, we have this unique ability of resiliency and a call to adapt to our specific needs throughout our journey of life. The path of our journey can seem treacherous at times without additional support to level the walkway. With my humanistic approach to counseling individuals, I allow a space for you to freely explore and come to resolutions tailored to your needs. Telehealth Virtual Sessions available.

  • I enjoy spending time with my family and lovely 4-year-old daughter, I like to catch up on television and superhero movies, and I love to play the guitar. I have a passion for music and expressive arts, which I carry with me into my counseling approach, as I believe when words fail, we can always use another medium to express ourselves and find deeper meanings within who we are.

Thank you for reading a little about me. I look forward to learning more about you and working with you on your journey towards a meaningful life, making wonderful music together along the way as we build the soundtrack to your life.
