What is Mindfulness?

What is Mindfulness?

Thank you Malorie Malone, Student Counselor, for your contribution.

Please read Malorie’s thoughts on Mindfulness for you below and when you are ready you can connect with us to learn more about working with Malorie!

Mindfulness is: intentional attention. It is not: “clearing the mind” or stopping thoughts. Mindfulness meditation is not about controlling or stopping thoughts but cultivating a different relationship to thoughts. Thoughts are not an enemy. Mindfulness meditation is cultivating presence and awareness to allow yourself to experience the present. It is noticing what is arising and falling away inside the mind, body, and surroundings without being identified with or carried away by it. Mindfulness, with respect to the thinking mind is: noticing thoughts and making the distinction that thoughts are happening, without judgement, bias, or manipulation.

Who Can Benefit?

Anyone can benefit from mindfulness practice. In particular, it is great for people who:

-want to know themselves on a deeper level.

-feel as though they have been sleepwalking through life and want to show up more fully.

-struggle with identifying with thoughts and emotions.

-want to become less reactive in daily life.

-suffer with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression.

-want to see the world with increased mental clarity.

-want to train their attention.

A Tip to Get Started:

Establishing the right view of mindfulness practice is important.  What it is/isn’t and how to go about it is the ground floor to deepening and developing it past the basic instructions.
